We do a lot of hard work around here to keep out fitness levels high. The average Kenzai member takes four programs a year, which comes out to more than half the year spent in training. It's a great way to live, and it has a fantastic side effect — you get to say YES!
Here's what I mean. I was at a party recently and struck up a conversation with a guy who's into sailboat racing. After a few minutes of talking he invited me go out some weekend and try my hand at working the boat during a friendly race. My first internal reaction was a shy, "Oh no, I can barely tie my shoelaces..."
But instead I said, "Sure. Let's do it."
I may not know anything about boats, but I know that I'm in good shape and can keep up with anyone else out there physically. I'm not going to run out of breath. I can keep my balance. I'm strong. Through training I've developed the mental toughness to hang in there when physically uncomfortable. This isn't because I'm some special case, I would say every single Kenzai member has these qualities. You've been putting the time and energy into your fitness, and being able to say "YES!" is your reward.
As you go through the year, you'll be given many opportunities to try something different. It might be a rock climbing trip, a trial kickboxing class, or a tai-chi session at the park. Your knee-jerk reaction might be to demure and say, "But I've never done that before, I won't be any good..." If you've been training, you can confidently think, "I've never done that before, but my body is ready for it, so... why not?"
Keep this "why not?" spirit and take people up on their offers. Even if the new activity isn't your cup of tea, you'll be surprised by how much better you do than the average newbie. Most people have a fitness foundation made of clay. The slightest pressure and the cracks start showing. Kenzai members have a foundation of steel. Nutrition, consistent exercise, and long term discipline make you rise above the rest.
Other people can sense this, which is why you might be getting all those invitations in the first place.
So say YES whenever you can!
